letting me know he's buying his wife a 2010 CRV.
Ulgh. That has to be one of the least remarkable cars on the planet. It has all the CUV blandness, weight, and ride height of the current model, and that awful AWFUL window taper.

Did you tell him he should pick something better? Or that his apparent mediocrity makes you like him a little less?

could be worse...is it at least AWD?

If they wanted "Japanese Reliability" why not a Subaru Forester?
It's better in every way, while still being large and ungainly enough to satisfy even the most terrible IJACs out there.
These are obviously not car people. We should start our own show along the line of Overhaulin' but, instead of stealing people's cars to fix them, we steal their cars and replace them with better ones.

I think that gen still came with a manual/AWD option.

I don't mind its blandness so much, but I do hate how you can't see out of the back at all. It's like driving a really slow AWD Camaro, but not.

Nope not in North America ending at the end of the second gen run for North America. Still can get a manual in these Europe.

It is. And it could be much worse. It's a decent vehicle. It's just so forgettable. It's exactly the flavor of water.
